Therapy Group

Welcome to our Therapy Group

Group Therapy
The purpose of the group is for members to address their concerns and make positive changes in their lives. Moreover, they gain a sense of belonging and acceptance by being part of a group of other people who have the same experiences and seeing that what they are going through is universal and that they are not alone.

What will I gain if I join?

Joining a group of strangers may sound intimidating at first, but group therapy provides benefits that individual therapy may not. Psychologists say, in fact, that group members are almost always surprised by how rewarding the group experience can be.
Group therapy can help in many ways:
  • Your own support network. The other members of the group often help you come up with specific ideas for improving a difficult situation or life challenge, and hold you accountable along the way. Moreover, they provide support to each other within a non-judgmental mindset, where there's no finger-pointing, but only empathy and compassion.
  • Self-development. Members help each other by sharing information and their strengths and help others in the group, which can boost, self-esteem and confidence. They can also learn to avoid behaviors that are destructive or unhelpful in real life.
  • Gain perspective. Regularly talking and listening to others also helps you put your own problems in perspective. Oftentimes, you may feel like you are the only one struggling — but you're not. It can be a relief to hear others discuss what they're going through, and realize you're not alone.
  • Your safety net. Members practice new skills in the group, and as they do, their confidence for practicing them outside the group grows. They’re also able to carry the groups’ support with them between sessions, making it easier to take risks, she said. “If you know you can report back to a group of people who care about you and will listen to your experience, you tend to feel braver. Knowing someone will catch you if you fall emboldens you to leap. The group becomes the net.”
  • Diversity. People have different personalities and backgrounds, and they look at situations in different ways. By seeing how other people tackle problems and make positive changes, you can discover a whole range of strategies for facing your own concerns.
  • More than Support. Group therapy sessions are led by our psychologist with specialized training, who teach group members proven strategies for managing specific problems. If you're involved in an anger-management group, for instance, your psychologist will describe scientifically tested strategies for controlling anger. That expert guidance can help you make the most of your group therapy experience.
  • More affordable. Group therapy is less financially demanding when compared to individual counseling/therapy, and at the same time share the benefits of healing and rebuilding yourself along with the other members.

Q & A

How much can I share within the group?
Confidentiality is an important part of the ground rules for group therapy. From meeting one we work on building Trust between each other, because groups work best where there is open and honest communication. Group members will start out as strangers, but in a short amount of time, you'll most likely view them as a valuable and trusted source of support.

What is the goal of the Therapy Group?
The first and foremost goal is for each member to gain a greater understanding of himself or herself and deal with their own struggles. However, we have a common goal as well: group cohesiveness and mutual support and healing.

Who is facilitating the group?
The group is facilitated by a trained therapist. She makes sure the group follows the standard rules and the members respect each other during the process. At the same time, she provides the practical tools so that the members can start building new skills and deal with their struggles. Find more about the facilitator here.

Is group therapy enough?
Many people find it's helpful to participate in both group therapy and individual psychotherapy. Participating in both types of psychotherapy can boost your chances of making valuable, lasting changes. If you've been involved in individual psychotherapy and your progress has stalled, joining a group may jump-start your personal growth.

What other members said

"I've recently joined a new Support Group. I didn't know what to expect but each time I have been, I've noticed that there is a healing 'energy' in the room. People share their stories and situations in a safe way. It's a small intimate group, it feels good to have a window to share with others travelling a similarly difficult journey. Vassia who facilitates holds the group in a very talented way. She gives home exercises that are really causing me to be brave and deepen the process of acceptance."
